Fishing PFD where to order/ Thoughts on best ones!
« on: March 08, 2017, 08:06:17 pm »
Hey guys,
I have been doing some research looking at getting a new PFD for this season going to replace the shitty sterns one I have used the last 3 seasons with all the padding on the lower back, I looking forward to actually getting a paddling fishing PFD. I know this subject has been done a few times, but I noticed there has been quite a few new models come out since the last person posted. I am leaning toward the NRS chinook looks like a great one and everyone that seems to have one loves it. But it is quite a bit of money, Wondering if someone has found something comparable. I always have mine on when on the kayak so more than anything I want to be happy with it. Also where do people order them from. I am on PEI I haven't been able to find anyone around here that sells them.

Thanks for the help in advance!!

The Chinook is a fantastic PFD. You wont go wrong with that.
If i replace it, it would likely be with one of those Mustang inflatable ones.

Noah i suggest you try a Salus Canadian made Angler PFD. Not the Kayak angler version. Reason being is the thin straps on the Kayak angler version sliding around. The Angler version better with the full vest feel, thin back at bottom that doesnt effect paddling and vest mesh at top tends to keep you cooler. And super light and no bulky feeling. Plenty of PFD's have the bulk at top part of them and push you forward in your seat in the yak. That is why i don't wear my other ones now. I have 3 PFD's now and always go back to the angler vest and its 9  years old and will get a new one this year.  Can order direct or your dealer closest to you.Good luck

I've used the same NRS Chinook for 6 or 7 years now and when it finally wears out, which it's getting close to, I'll buy another as close to the same as NRS makes. Bite the bullet and pay the price - once you get over "buyers remorse" you'll be glad you did.

There are a ton of retailers of NRS products in Canada shown at
https://www.nrs.com/services/dealerlocator.asp?Action=Country&country=Canada
(check the map for the 2 PEI dealers) and I'm sure a few of them would also have online ordering. How about Amazon.ca?

I much prefer my NRS to my old Mustang inflatable vest mainly for its many pockets which permanently contain many fishing odds 'n' ends. Also, I'm certain it will float whereas the Mustang is dependent on my being conscious enough in an emergency to activate the the CO2 cartridge or manually blow it up if the cartridge fails. The Mustang is light and convenient, though.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the great responses this is defintely helping me out! I thought about those john, they arent cheap either, I really like having pockets. Just personal preference! it would be nice and light though, The only thing I worry about with those if the worst happens and you are able to manually inflate them then they could be dangerous!

Shooter- thanks for the tip! I will go take a look at them right now!

red rocket- there are a couple dealers but they don't stock them so they have to be ordered in anyways, I did check amazon but the cheapest chinook I found was way more than it should have been. perhaps coming from a dealer in the states.

Thanks for all the help guys this is great!

The NRS Chinook is discontinued on their website, probably why it is tough to find and why prices are inflated on some websites.

I been interested in the manual inflatable ones by either Mustang or Hobie cause then I might wear it more often. I hate how my cheap one messes up my back by being between me and my seat. When I do use it I leave it unbuttoned at bottom and put the back of pfd behind seat so that it doesn't interfere with my comfort.

Id venture to say they are going to re brand it with a few tweaks. that PFD sold too damn well for them to just stop producing it.

Oh really I had no idea. Ya I always where mine and have it fastened. But I have the same issue is with the pad down low on your back while your day fishing it is always bunching up and trying to make its way up your back.
