First fishfinder??
« on: April 22, 2013, 05:33:12 pm »
Looking for suggestions on a good quality entry level fishfinder to mount on my Cuda 14. I have never used or owned one. Working with a max $300 budget.

Best suggestion I can give is to keep your eye open for sales. Canadian Tire always has something on sale, but definitely check some of your local shops as well. If you're patient, for $300 you should be able to find a decent fishfinder with a colour screen and dual cone transducer. The better units will find the bottom no different than the cheaper ones, but they will better define what's down there, and should show you a clearer picture of what's underneath you.

I would highly recommend the Garmin 550C, I picked one up over the winter and have been very impressed so far with it. I got a great deal on mine in the off-season that put it well within your price range.

Yeah $300 is enough for a nice fish finder, definitely out of the budget range.

$300 will get you a decent FF,

I played only $180 "on sale" for Lowranace elite 4x DSI, they go for $210 can..
Radioworld has it listed for $195 right now.

If you never own FF, maybe regular FF and not DSI $175 Elite 4x.

Elite 4x DSI is nice for kayak fishing,  show you exactly what you need to know under the water and depth.

The Elite 4 DSI in above video is the more expensive with GPS/map $355, they were on sale few weeks ago $320 at basspro.  However there a rebate $50 USD via Visa Prepaid Card until June 30..

yes it a local store in Toronto, been in business for years like 30 years..
It's been around longer then Basspro, remember finding the store mid 90's when went to classes at York U.
http://radioworld.ca/about_us.php?
They have a youtube channel with some video from inside the store..

Actually there FF sales person Lawren Wetzel, used to work for Lowrance just couple years ago but now work for Radioworld.

Here Lawren Wetzel few years, he knows his FF..
Deep Weedline Bass with Electronics

Many kayaker around GTA can tell you they actually purchase there FF/GPSs/Marine radio at Radioworld, guys from as far Bracebridge, Geuph, Barrie all took drive down to Radioradio.
Basspro is only like 5 mins via 400 hwy, unlike the 18-20 age sales guy they have behind Basspro FF counter the sales guy at Radioworld know the products..
Why a lot of the boats guys also get there marine stuff at this store and pretty sure they do busy coast to coast, been around awhile.

Last year Gerry Heels from Lowrance Ice Fishing Seminar at Radioworld 2012, was like 100 ppl there.

Jschiele just notice you are from Edmonton,Ab. in your profile,  you should try to find FF at local shop and some money on shipping..
Isn't there a cabelas store in Edmonton?

I only posted Radioworld for example of prices found around Toronto because I know there site prices are in Canadian dollars unlike Basspro.

Thanks fellas!! I think im going to try the 4x DSI.

When you first get the unit play with the different colours, depending what am over eg flat/rock/log or over heavy weeds I found changing the colour for me really make a different.

If this is your first FF, remember that thee 4X DSI will not beep "audible alarm" with fish under kayak like standard FF, however most season angle usually have that feature disable.

With the 4X DSI unit it will show you depth/structure below, won't show you fish like standard, it will show you if you know how to read the dots/lines from tree/rock/weed.
You will need to learn how read the dots and movement eg, sharp lines steak across screen.

There are many buyer that first purchase the DSI complaining unit don't show them fish like there old standard FF.  The DSI works different and you will need to figure out what information you rather have.

Here is review from a kayaker.
http://www.akff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=53629

Personally I never really trusted all the fish that my old humminbird said were below and for myself I really like the DSI just showing me depth/structure, then I can decide if fish might be a good fishing holding spot.

Am going to J-bay in few weeks and will be looking for school of bait fish, where there large school there will be striper/blue around.

Go to a store and look at both elite 4x dsi and elite 4x, ask question, see which one you would like.

thank you for all the input. I definately just want a unit that will display depth and structure well so I can find the fish.
