making a new paddle -sort of!
« on: July 20, 2011, 01:51:00 am »
i realized i had broken my wooden paddle driving home after dinner from the Hammond river classic this weekend past. since i was hoping to win a paddle at the tourney, this was a real drag (nope-no paddle for ipop at the tourney, not my weekend i guess). it`s wood, i can rebuild it, it will just take some wood glue and work.
but i need another paddle now. i have one for the clients but don`t want to show up using one with half a blade myself.

then i remembered what was behind my front door - a paddle blank! i had made it years ago - i had been having a lot of trouble with my arms, i can paddle with one hand if it`s my right hand , but wanted a "flat" paddle to be able to do the same with just my left hand. this is a combo paddle row technique. anyway, i have this wooden flat paddle blank (no angle between the blades). made from 2x2 spruce, i knew it was hard wood to carve. so today i bought a sanding disk for my grinder, and used that to thin out and work the paddle. i should have taken before and after shots, it`s almost done now, needing just some more thinning on one blade, smoothing the handle and adding scroll or rings to help the dripping. then i will either spar paint the blades or fibre glass them, and the handle except for the grip area. my buddy was amazed i did it so quick. it feels good. i think i`ll make another. 8)

okay, here are some shots. when i started yesterday it was full wood 2x2 with just the corner edge taken off but it was marked already with a center line.
here is the paddle as i started this morning. notice one blade is almost done, the other still chunky. this is a very square paddle blade, and very tough, so i can push off with no worries and be more forgiving when my arms are messing up...

here is a closer look at the still mostly rough blade

and another shot of the other almost finished blade this morning

i have it almost done now, both blades formed and at least the first set of rings cut.

here is a shot showing the old veteran paddle i have been using and the "new" paddle, still unspar painted or fibre glassed.

notice the broken blade on the veteran and much more "beaver tail" blade.

here is a close up of the baldes

i have to split my time between finishing it and getting going on the new yaks, since it`s funtional now, that was it for paddle making today. my next paddle will be the more traditional beaver tail blade, set at 90° to each other. i`ll get another shot once it`s finnished.

I don't make paddles but I have painted many of them over the years.. Chris has 2 I painted for him this past Christmas. I don't have any pics but maybe we could convince him to take some pics of them and post them here.

Thanks for the comments guys.. I want to work on a sleeve tatoo as well but I can't afford the damn thing.. You give me some suggestions of what you want and I can come up with something and then send it to you to see what you think.. or you can find a bunch of various pics on the web and we can make them work together somehow..
