1st Yak Purchase imminent...final discussion
« on: April 30, 2011, 06:34:15 pm »
Hello again yall, its been a while. I have narrowed my yak search to either a OC trident 11 or 13. I have found a good price on a 13 without rudder. This leads me to my question...To rudder or not to rudder? I will be fishing in small lakes, rivers and potentially a big lake. How important is having a rudder? Thanks.

I have boats with and without rudder. I'm in the rudder is an awesome addition camp. Essential? No, but once you have one you'll  never want to be without

If you are planning to use downrigger a lot or troll big plugs just on one side of the boat, rudder is a great addition. Otherwise with 13' kayak you can totally go without it.

I have just got back from the smallie slam and as soon as I can afford it I will get a rudder for my T15, when the wind picked up today the boat just would not track in a straight line, I had to work twice as hard just to keep it pointing where I wanted to go, without the effort of paddling into a head wind as well, if you are going to use it on medium to large lakes in anything more than perfect weather get one!

hey thanks for the feedback, it seems the rudder is the way to go for sure. I will check out what my dealers can do for me.

I have the T13 without a rudder.  No plans on getting one.  I find I can control my course with a slight lean and at times a sweep (I rarely used the rudder on my sea kayak either).

You guys that find a rudder essential, are you using it when drifting and fishing(e.g. letting the wind/current push you)?  I was wondering if there was an un-obvious reason that you find it useful.

Thanks,
John

You wont be disapointed.
if i can make one suggestion (from experience).  dont put scotty rod mounts beside your sonar shield... utterly useless spot for them imo.

I definitely agree with John there is no need for the forward mounts.  I think I will put a scotty base on my rod pod this week because really you can't reach anything else.  I had the rod extenders even and couldn't find much use for the sonar-side mounts.

As for the rudder they are a great help but they will not save you when the wind is 40kph+.  When conditions get that strong your boat is going to turn into the wind rudder or no.  What the rudder is good for is when there is a mild breeze or when you want to control your drift.  With the 13' I don't know that I'd even bother with one but with a 15' its likely a good idea.  That being said I don't think I'm going to bother with one as when the wind gets that high the fishing isn't worth doing anyway.
