Brent,

You've travelling a lot, Merickville seems pretty central to a lot of good fishign.  I've seen Summit lake on the stocking sheet for years and always wanted to go (from my pre-kayak days using a float tube), do you have to portage to get in, drive up (in a normal car) or can you paddle in?  It seems a bit out of the way.

Simple answer yes you can drive there, there's even a bit of gravelly launch, lawn chairs and fire pit ..the magic of Ompah land..learnt hard way..done exhaust and front end work on my Focus Wagon. Looking at Topos. Wolfe and Summit should be easy to find ( GPS may help ) found Granite ,Hungry, and Mair prior! First left off Arcol Rd after
sand pit is a private road..hunt camps have lease's..road open ( Archery starts Oct 1st ) goes to Summit..nasty knoll just before lake for car.instead take arcol past Egg
lake turn-off ( sign may get shoot-off in Fall ) turn left ..on a commercial pit road.
take pit bypass road (left )( gate to pit closed)  cross creek and look for yellow lawn chairs. Wolfe I found harder to find..stop on Pit Road drag PEL through bush ( don't think wheels be much help )..more rainbows..Both Wolfe and Summit a bit muskeggy..
max. depth 25-30' ( I just count rod lenghts of line)..Mair is the Mecca for Bows ( 120'
deep..santauary in heat waves..32 1/2"..12.5 lbs last year. ( I walked to Butternut lake
near granite..native and stocked specks this spring..wait next year..Quinns are famous for specks.)

Got Fly rod last year..yak this spring..spoons worked better in spring but
a sinking fly line does well in summer ( let line hit bottom..25-30' ..jerk and wait for hit ).First Splake I've ever landed..Just got to rid Carp,Longnose & Redhorse curse.
Got first brown in 7 min. of fishing..tried for a better quality fish..1 more juv.
then packed drove 15min to Granite.

When we were at Granite in the spring we tried to drive to the Quin's (also went to Mosque, but I got skunked, huge midge hatch lots of wind, and the other guys were in jonboat and couldn't handle the conditions).  Had buddies forerunner and a 14' trailer with boats on it, likely didn't make it a quarter of the way.  Definately ATV country.  Too far from Peterborough to make a day trip, but I'm going to try camping there soon, likely schooner, with the kids in tow.  I'll sneak a little bit of fishing in.  If the camping works out I'll try again in the fall (good point about hunting season, rather get up before the festivities start).

Thanks,
John

Good fishing Brent!

I need some help with the carp myself. No offense to carp lovers but it's hard to dedicate serious time to them when there's other species to chase. I'm probably going to get it for that comment but not from anyone on the west coast lol.

Have you ever driven over a small bridge or Culvet and wonder what fish live there?
I stop on the side of the road at a small bridge and see a Suckface in the water..
it has no redfins and not all one colour like a Carp. I check the 4 access corners of the bridge and decide my route. Unload Yak ..carefully , traffic going by and pull it over guard rail down to water. Under the bridge there's about 14 SUCKFACES and the water
is only a foot deep. Getting in Yak I've spooked them a bit and start swimming away..
I cast worm with a small spit shot...PLUP..nothing ..Cast again in the middle of pack.
nothing..now they are circling back..I take split shot off.. The Two biggest decide to take cover Under My YAK..drop worm in front of mouth and suckface opens mouth and worm disappears..I set hook and a fun fight was one..water splashing all over the place.
Finally got a suckface and ITS A BEAUT !

I Think its one of two possibilites.. ( Mike will Know )

Nope.. Lake Chubsucker grows to only a foot long, rarely found in streams and is
almost extinct!  I'll try to scan chart.
